Caving Equipment Checklist

       

 

 

Basic Caving Gear

Essentials:

q Helmet with chinstrap and headlamp

q  Backup lights (at least 3 independent sources; i.e. extra headlamp, flashlights, LEDs, glow sticks)

q  Extra batteries and bulbs (for ALL light sources)

q  Candle, cigarette lighter, or matches for testing for bad air

q  Knee pads

q  Elbow pads (optional but useful)

q  Gloves (Work-type, canvas or leather)

q  Hiking boots (sturdy; non-marking/light-soled)

q  Boot socks

q  Jeans, shirt, sweatshirt or light jacket (will get dirty)

q  Small backpack (day-pack) or fannypack

q  Water bottle

q  Drinking water

q  Pee bottle

q  Food (high-energy, easy-to-eat)

q  Plastic bags/ziplocks for trash, food, etc.

q  First aid kit (basic, compact; at least one person in the caving party should have this item)

 

Other helpful but optional caving gear:

q  Waterproof gunny sack (for wet caves)

q  Water socks (for working on or around formations)

q  Space blanket

q  Hand warmer pouches

 

Basic Camping Equipment

q  Tent, tarps, etc.

q  Sleeping bag, pad, pillow, etc.

q  Sunblock

q  First aid kit

q  Non-caving clothes; dry clothes for exiting cave

q  Rain jacket or poncho

q  Food, drinking water, cooking & eating utensils
